“Stena Britannica”:
A new and giant Stena Seamasterclass vessel
  Stena Britannica
Built by Hyundai, Ulsan, South Korea for Stena RoRo, Gothenburg, Sweden. Newbuilding 1392. Delivered January 7, 2003.

“Stena Britannica II” was delivered from Hyundai, Ulsan in South Korea to Stena RoRo on January 7, 2003. The suffix II was dropped when the “Stena Britannica” built in 2000, was re-named “Finnfellow”.

The new vessel is chartered by Stena Line and took up service between Hoek van Holland and Harwich on 25 February. Despite the 900 passengers capacity “Stena Britannica” is mainly concentrating on freight. The restaurant and bar on deck 8 are primarily used for large groups or when additional facilities are needed due to problems with the HSS traffic and closed when not needed. Deck 8 also holds 98 cabins occupied by truckers who normally sleep even on the day crossings. Suitable restaurant and bar facilities, a main galley, shop and a guest service desk are found on deck 7, the principal passenger deck.
On deck 9 is a conference centre and 112 cabins for two persons, 34 cabins for four persons and two cabins for dis-abled. Deck 10 is a crew only deck.
The garages are connected with the upper decks by logically coloured stair towers on each side. Red for port side and green for starboard side.
Freight is carried on four different decks accessed via a stern ramp. Between the main deck and the lower deck is a fixed ramp in the aft part of the vessel and a partly hoistable ramp in the forward part. From main deck to upper deck is a 50 meters long tiltable ramp and from upper deck to weather deck a hoistable ramp. The decks have a total of 3,479 lanemeters and 120 reefer points are fitted.

Machinery
“Stena Britannica” is equipped with four MAN B&W 9L40/54 main engines with a total output of 25,920 kW at 550 rpm. The main engines are connected to two Kamewa propellers via two twin input – single output Renk gearboxes. Two Hyundai shaft generators of 2,400 kW each are fitted. The control room is situated on the upper level on the port side forward of the main engine room and the separator room is below. On the other side is the boiler room with two large boilers with an output of 3,500 kg/h at seven bars.
The auxiliary engine room is divided into two rooms by the workshop and the central ramp and located aft of the main engine room.
Two 1,280 kW MAN B&W Holeby 8L23/30A gensets are installed in each room. Eight compact catalytic converters (SCR) have been installed in connection with the silencers. The equipment is designed to reduce the NOx output by 94 per cent, from 13 to 0,8 g/kWh.
As “Stena Britannica” is longer than the berths both in Hoek van Holland and Harwich have been designed for, an excellent manoeuvrability is of outmost importance.
Therefore two Kamewa bow thrusters of 2,200 kW each, together with two Becker flap rudders have been installed.
