Ships of the Year

Scandinavian Shipping Gazette
December 23, 2004

Editorial:Winds of change. If published two decades ago, this edition of “Ships of the Year” would probably have included several Swedish and Finnish luxurious car- and passenger ferries – also referred to as “cruise ferries”. Almost every year in the 1980’s at least one new cruise ferry was introduced in the traffic between Finland and Sweden.

Ports and Maritime Logistics

Further use for Brunvoll thrusters. Brunvoll thrusters have been around since 1965, when the first was used in a purse seiner. Since then Brunvoll has grown to become a world leading supplier of thrusters.   “Pamir”:A stormy life with a tragic end. Although there are still a few large square-riggers sailing as training ships, their time was up long ago.

Compact tugs to Estonia.

“Color Fantasy”:The largest in the world. Color Line’s new EUR 300 million flagship “Color Fantasy” is not just any ordinary ferry. The owners prefer to call her the world’s largest cruise ship with car decks.

Luxury ferry for Tallink.

Five new Norwegian coastguard vessels. Remøy Management and Remøy Shipping will provide the Norwegian Coastguard with five new 700-ton vessels on 15-years charter with options, the first to be delivered before the end of 2005.

Ro-ro vessels for Swedish paper shipments. Kappa Packaging has introduced two new ro-ro-vessels for its export shipments to the UK and the Continent.

“Svitzer Mars”: Steady stream of tug-newbuilds. The Svitzer Wijsmuller Group still has a long way to go in newbuilds. During the last couple of years the number of newbuilds on order has been at a constant level of 38–40 units.

”Krossfjord“: Stern trawler from Gryfia.

“Esvagt Corona”: Top-level standby and rescue.
A floating tow-truck or an ambulance, which nobody really wants use at all – unless an accident occurs.

”Fure Norf“: First in trio of Donsö sisters

“Maersk Ras Laffan”: Newbuild with 25 years of charter.
The Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tanker Maersk Ras Laffan was the most expensive newbuild acquired by any Danish shipping company in 2004.
