SES Onboard

SES Onboard –
a source for competence development

SES Onboard is not only a new tool for competence building within Maritime Safety, Environment and Security, it is also a part of a new concept where a trade publication is used as a tool for continuous monitoring of external developments within shipping companies’ internal competence development programmes for onboard and shore-based staff.

The primary task for a ship team is to navigate a vessel between two ports in the safest way possible for cargo, passengers, crew, environment and the ship itself. This requires competence, formal and informal. Formal competence is competence validated by exams and certificates, but the informal competence is just as important to carry out a task in a proper, professional manner. Informal competence is renewable and needs continuous nourishment to develop. This has become even more important during recent years with tightened rules and regulations and increased demands for safe sea transportations put on seafarers by society.

Easily accessible information
To feed the informal competence building, seafarers need continuous and easily accessible information, which must be provided in a clear, concise and trustworthy manner.

SES Onboard consists of a standing section in the printed edition of Scandinavian Shipping Gazette and a web site, www.sesonboard.com. The focus is on Maritime Safety, Environment and Security issues of interest for ship operating professionals at sea and in shore-based organisations. The aim is to become a source for SES related news, information, facts and figures, to present new rules and regulations and also to be an interface between schools, universities and other research institutions on one hand and the in operative positions on the other. It also includes material exclusively produced by our partners for SES Onboard.

SES Onboard is developed together with a number of partners, among those Codan/Trygg-Hansa Marine and Det Norske Veritas. An increasing number of shipowners and ship managers have also joined the project. Those joining the program can also contribute in different ways and in various extents. Some are information providers, while others participates by highlighting issues, which they feel should be addressed by SES Onboard. A steering committee will be established with representatives for SSG, partners and participating shipowners to monitor the development of SES Onboard, including evaluations and to give feedback to the SSG staff.

A broader perspective
Increased knowledge leads to increased self-confidence and increased safety. Apart from a high level of knowledge within the safety, environment and security areas it is important that professional seafarers see their mission in a broader perspective, to add ”why” to the ”how to take a vessel from A to B”. Monitoring external developments is a vital part in competence development in a broader sense.

SES Onboard is a part of a concept where shipowners and ship managers use Scandinavian Shipping Gazette as a complement to their own in-house training and competence development programs. The employees receive the printed edition to their home addresses; the newsletter to their personal or professional e-mail addresses and they have full access to our web sites, www.shipgaz.com and www.sesonboard.com.

With Scandinavian Shipping Gazette, ship officers and shore-based professionals have a source not only for SES related information but also news, information, facts and figures in all other shipping related areas such as markets, politics and legislation, technology, finance and insurance, all needed to gain a broad shipping competence.
