The Pure Car Truck Carrier Aida was delivered from Daewoo Heavy Industry Ltd in Korea to Wallenius Lines AB on May 26, 2006. Her first ports of call were Inchon, Pyongtaek and Masan, where she loaded for European ports in the Mediterranean, the UK and on the continent. Her sister ship the Otello left the same yard three months later almost to the day.

The vessels are built to the highest class of Lloyd’s register according to: +100 A1 Vehicle carriers with three decks strengthened for ro-ro cargo plus LMC, UMS and IWS.

Room for 6,700 cars
The new PCTC vessels are 199 metres long and have a capacity of 6,700 cars or a combination of 3,000 cars and 400 buses on 13 decks.

The 3rd, 5th and 8th decks are strengthened and designed for heavy units. Decks three and eight can carry 1.5 tons/m2 and 2,5 tons/m2 can be loaded on deck five. The other decks allow loads of 0.22 and 0.25 tons/m2.

Five of the decks – numbers two, four, six, seven and nine – are divided into hoistable sections allowing cargo heights up to 6.5 metres. The sections are hoisted and lowered by mobile lift-cars.

The 5th deck is the normal entrance deck but the 6th deck may be used, if the height of the quay requires it. The two ramps are on the starboard side. The stern quarter ramp is arranged at an angel of 27 degrees to the centre line for loading and discharging long vehicles. The midship ramp is arranged at a 90 degrees angle to the centre line.

During loading and discharging the air in the main holds is changed 25 times every hour and up to 50 times in the smaller holds.

Two combined winches
The deck machinery consists of two combined anchor/mooring winches and six conventional mooring winches, two of which are placed on the forecastle and four on the poop deck.

The machinery meets the requirements for Unattended Machinery Space (UMS) and the main propulsion machinery is a B&W two stroke engine, 7S60MC-C, with constant pressure supercharging and a maximum output of 21,490 BHP at 105 rpm. The engine is directly reversible and connected to a fixed propeller.

The auxiliary machinery is installed in a separate room and consists of two STX MAN B&W diesel engines, SL21/31, each connected to an AC generator, 3x450 V, 60 Hz, 1,400 kW.

For electrical power supply during the voyages a shaft generator with a capacity of 1,000 kW is used.

The emergency diesel generator has a capacity of 215 kW.

A full outlook
The bridge has a 360 degrees outlook and the equipment fulfils the requirements for Sole look out at sea and is designed for the Pilot/Co-pilot system.

The navigation system is mainly integrated by means of an INC installation. The INC is of the Finnish Aspo “Ants” (Automated Navigation and Track-keeping System) type. A VDR has been installed and the radar equipment has anti-collision computers (ARPAs).

The vessels have an Aspo/Wallenius electronic sea chart system and two DGPS navigators for calculating the position. When sailing in coastal waters, there is a fixed radar target positioning system.

The radio stations are fitted with satellite communication (B+C), Maritex, GSM etc. and meet the rules for GMDSS.

All accommodation areas are located on upper and bridge deck and are of very high quality with a two-storey atrium with a top sky light.

The cargo holds, engine rooms and interiors have a permanent water fire post system and portable fire extinguishers. Engine rooms and cargo holds also have CO2 equipment of total flooding type.

Each crew member has a survival suit and there is also a free-falling life boat for 30 passengers and an MOB boat. There are four life rafts for 16 passengers each.
