The Stena Poseidon and the Palva:
Ice strengthened panamax tankers

Carrying special grades of petroleum products from Finland to North America for Neste Oil is the main employment for two new ice strengthened panamax product carriers, operated by Neste Oil’s subsidiary Neste Shipping.
The 75,000 DWT product carriers Stena Poseidon and Palva are jointly owned by the Swedish company Concordia Maritime AB (publ) and the Finnish Neste Shipping Oy. The two sisters are built to Finnish/Swedish ice class 1A to cope with the difficult ice conditions in the Gulf of Finland. According to the specification they shall maintain a speed of five knots in a broken channel with one metre thick unfrozen ice.

In September 2004 the joint venture announced the order of two panamax product tankers from the Croatian shipyard Brodosplit. The same shipyard is also the builder of the series of Stena P-Max product carriers for Concordia Maritime of the Stena sphere.

Both panamax vessels were named on November 16, 2006. The Stena Poseidon was handed over on 17 January 2007, followed by the sister vessel Palva one month later on February 22. Neste Shipping is the commercial operator and manager of the vessels and has taken them on time charter for more than ten years.
The vessels mainly carry low sulphur traffic fuels from Neste Oil’s Porvoo refinery to the North American market. The main ports of call have so far been on the US East coast, but the tankers are also intended for shipments to the US West coast with transit through the Panama Canal.

Extended double hull
The design of the two tankers is based upon a standard panamax-type of the shipyard. It has been modified to fit Neste Shipping’s specific needs, including the demand for high ice class, which is characteristic for all tankers in the Neste Shipping fleet.

The extended double hull of the vessels is covering the cargo tanks as well as the fuel and lubricant tanks. There are six pairs of coated cargo tanks and two slop tanks with a total volume of 85,672 cubic metres with 100 per cent filling. Six parcels of cargo can be handled simultaneously.

For tank heating there are steam heat exchangers for all cargo tanks and stainless heating coils for the slop tanks. Each cargo tank is equipped with a submerged hydraulically driven Framo SD300 centrifugal pump with capacity for 1,000 cbm/h and two Scanjet tank cleaning machines. For ballast handling there are two pumps with a capacity of 1,500 cbm/h. The Moss inert gas generator system has a capacity of 7,500 cbm/h.

The MAN B&W 6S60 MC-C main engine is license-built by Brodosplit. With an output of 13,560 kW at 105 rpm the slow speed engine provides a service speed of 16 knots on design draft in open water. The vessels have a controllable pitch propeller to provide better manoeuvrability in ice.

Safety has been given great attention in the design of the bridge, which provides 360 degrees visibility. The integrated navigation system is supplied by Raytheon.
The Palva and Stena Poseidon are both sailing under the Finnish flag and are manned by Finnish crews.
