Last week’s severe ice conditions in the Åland Sea that caught several vessels in the ice and led to two vessels touching each other, eased during Sunday.
“It’s back to normal winter traffic, says Ulf Gullne, head of the ice breaker departmnet at the Swedish Maritime Authority, SMA.
It was wind and currents in combination that made the ice in the Bay of Bothnia to press against the narrow Sea of Åland. The pressure became a severe problem also for the ice-breakers.
SMA voiced critisism against ships and owners for not having listened to issued warnings. This has been denied from the operators. According to those, they never received any warnings and the ban against traffic in the area were issued several hours after the Finnlink and the Amorella touched.
“We will have a meeting to discuss this with Viking Line on Wednesday”, says Gullne.
