Scandinavian Shipping Gazette
April 23, 2004
Editorial:
Motorways of the sea the key to a new ro-ro era
The problem isnt that shipping pays the problem is
that the other transport modes dont.

Honestly: Norways chicken has come home
to roost . Men and women of the state have always
been good at the deception game, or you could call it political
trickery. Take people minds off the real issues and feed them what
they want to hear.

Fleet
news: A floating casino. If anyone has ever wondered how
the Scandinavian-sounding name Wasa Queen might look in Chinese
letters, just take a closer look at this fine picture of the vessel
at full speed off Hong Kong, taken in January 2004.

Scandinavian triangle
is established. Around 250 delegates and 147 companies descended
on Grimstad in Southern Norway last month for the first Maritim Partenariat
or Scandinavian Triangle to investigate if there is
business to be made among traditional trading partners. |

Pro-active approach to Barents Sea is
essential. Energy export is an important source of foreign exchange
income for Russia. As the most important source of incremental non-OPEC
oil, the country is already established as a powerful force in the
world energy markets. |

BornholmsTrafikken:
The most expensive bidding round in Danish Domestic ferry traffic.
BornholmsTrafikken, the state-owned Danish ferry operator which
takes care of traffic to and from the Isle of Bornholm, turned out
to be the only bidder for the coming five years of traffic service.

New solutions from
Transfennica. The building of Transfennicas next generation
of forest product carriers will start towards the end of the year
and the first vessel is due for delivery by the turn of 2005/2006.
These are in fact combined ro-ro and container vessels, suitable for
most of the ro-ro trades in Europe. |

New berths and extended terminal for DFDS at Immingham.
The new Immingham terminal for DFDS Tor Line has been under way
for a very long time. For several years, DFDS Tor Line has wanted to have
a greater number of options regarding size of ships and turnaround, but
this wasnt easy to negotiate. Finally, in February of this year, a contract
was signed with Associated British Ports (ABP) for a new two-berth terminal
outside the lock at Immingham. At present, the lock is a time drain for
the massive traffic of ro-ro ships to Nordic Terminal.

A
new ship with a long history. Newbuildings
are always projects where patience, flexibility and a good deal of
creativity are necessary virtues. Stena Freighter is a
project where those virtues were really tested to the limit. Six shipyards
in three countries and a berth in a French port were all involved
as well as towage operations covering a couple of thousand
nautical miles before the new vessel could enter into its new
service. |

|
The 4-runners: A coming classic? Stena RoRos 4-Runners
own all the qualities to become a future classic like the eleven
Searunners, built in the late 1970s. In true Stena RoRo manner,
they are flexible and well planned, making them suitable for the
most demanding ro-ro routes and cargoes.

German ro-ro leader
fights to stay on top. XFlensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft
(FSG) is positive about holding on to its position as Europes
leading builder of ro-ro ships and is hoping to announce further newbuilding
contracts in May. |

The
complexities of being green. Environmental manager Sara Gorton
and president Per Croner of Wallenius Marine responsible
for technical and ship management services to all Wallenius vessels
talk to Scandinavian Shipping Gazette about their environmental
challenges.

Many
car carriers and few pure ro-ros.
In April 2004 the ro-ro cargo vessel order book stood at about 120
vessels. In addition, orders for 51 combined passenger and vehicle
carriers were listed by LR-Fairplay as well as 14 multi-hull passenger/vehicle
carriers.
