Rold P NilssonEditorial: Shipping gains on EU enlargement
The fact that Jaques Barrot is from France, one of the heavyweight states in the Union, and that Barroso also made Barrot one of five vice presidents, implies that transport has gained importance in the new commission.

Comment: A chance to whip Statoil into shape With any luck Statoil’s new President and CEO, Mr Helge Lund, who took charge in mid August, should whip the company into shape and rid it of a considerable amount of dead wood.

The coastline of Estonia is almost 3‚800 km long – it is relatively long thanks to the many curves and numerous islands and islets found in plentiful supply especially on the West Estonian archipelago.

Strong growth forces Hamburg to rethink development In May 1189, Emperor Friedrich 1 Barbarossa granted the people of Hamburg exemption from customs duties for ships on the Elbe between the town and the North Sea. He would groan if he could see the revenue his magnaminity would cost him today.

Strong Scandinavian show at SMM There is a powerful Scandinavian presence among the more than 1,400 firms from over 50 countries on show at SMM in Hamburg 28 September–2 October.

MalmMalmö – close to European growth. The maritime community in Malmö, Sweden’s third largest city, has been hit by two devastating blows; the closure of the shipyard and the opening of the fixed-link to Denmark. But there are potential for a revival thanks to the city’s location in the middle of the Öresund region and on the brink of the Baltic Sea, today the region with the fastest growing economy within the EU.

WMU in Malm

Unique maritime education in Malmö. The World Maritime University (WMU) was established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The WMU’s mission is to serve the global maritime community as a centre of excellence and to be IMO’s apex institution for high-level maritime education and research.

IT and Communications.
To find the giant waves.

Finding the giant, rogue wave at sea is difficult, let alone trying to forecast when and where the next one will occur. For many years experts denied that such waves existed. But they do.
