Flexible vessel for short reefer trade
The "Kristian With" marks the realisation of new concepts in the short sea reefer trade, developed in co-operation with shipowner, shippers, shipyard and consultants.

The vessel is the first newbuilding for this trade for Scandinavian owners in almost 15 years, and has been designed as a side-loading reefer with container capacity. In addition to an innovative layout, great effort has been invested in optimal hull lines to achieve good speed at moderate fuel consumption.

Vaagland Båtbyggeri, located near Kristiansund, has built two side-loaders for Egil Ulvan Rederi, Trondheim. These vessels, "With Junior" built in 1998 and "Mikal With" in 2002, are 55–60-metre sideloaders, which found ready employment with coastal cargo services and fish-food suppliers. The shipowner then turned to Multi Maritime, a ship design and engineering firm based in Førde, to develop a larger vessel of the same basic concept, but with reefer and container capacities. The charterers CTG also came into the process at an early stage. Tenders were invited from Polish, Spanish and Norwegian yards, but the order ended up with Vaagland Båtbyggeri.

Multi Maritim AS developed a new design 20 metre longer and 3 metre beamier, with good cargo hold, temperature control from -27 to +32 ºC, cargo door midship with pallet lifts and deck capacity for 60 TEU. The cargo holds were designed for easy cleaning in view of hygienic standards. As the hull was made longer, it also allowed for new hull lines and better service speed and seakeeping abilities.

Interesting potential
In short, the Ulvan 80-metre multi-purpose vessel showed interesting potential for liner services and reefer trade. When the contract was placed with Vaagland Båtbyggeri in March 2004, the vessel was practically tied to a charter to Coldstore & Transport Group AS CTG, based in Sortland in northern Norway. This company operates regular reefer services between Norway and the UK/Continent, as well as in the fish export to the Baltic. A couple of months later, CTG followed with an order for a sister vessel from Vaagland.

The design, named MM 80 Reefer by Multi Maritime, went into production, with hull sections made in Poland and assembled in Vaagland’s covered building dock. The contract value at the time was NOK 100 million (EUR 12.6 million).

The MM 80 Reefer has been designed with four cargo holds of a total of 4,150 cbm. These are intended for palletised cargo, with access through a side door on the port side, served by a cargo lift of 3.05 x 1.40 metres. Each hold has separate temperature control.

In order to obtain balance between hold and deck capacity, there is a step in the weather deck aft. The deck capacity of 1,250 tonnes is sufficient for 60 TEU. The crane can take 50 tonnes lift on a 12-metre reach.

A MAN-B&W-engine of 4,104 bhp is placed aft, driving a large diameter propeller at 140 rpm via a reduction gear. In trials "Kristian With" reached a speed of 18.1 knots, which gives a comfortable 16-knot service speed on moderate consumption.

The design firm Multi Maritime AS has had success with ferries, offshore vessels and icebreakers, in addition to cargo vessels. Since the company was set up in 1982, it has grown and now employs a staff of 23.

On delivery, "Kristian With" was registered under the flag of Panama in order to be able to take coastal cargoes. However, she was not to retain her name for long. Barely a week after delivery, she was sold to Eimskip HF, Reykjavik, and registered at St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, under the name "Svartfoss".

Sister vessel ready in 2006
This move was, perhaps, not unexpected. In 2004, Eimskip acquired a majority share in CTG and has recently changed its name to Eimskip-CTG. This company has been integrated in Eimskip’s trading system of temperature-controlled cargoes in the North Atlantic basin. CTG will also take delivery of the sister vessel, to be ready in June 2006. In addition, Eimskip has ordered two similar vessels from Myklebust mek Verksted for delivery in January and April 2007.
Meanwhile, the "Svartfoss" will be followed with great interest as she commences her trading pattern between northern Norway and the UK/Continent.
